A Study on the Mind-Matter Connection_________________________________________________________________

Preliminary investigations of blood samples taken from people treated by the Filipino healer Alex Orbito. September 2001.

Abstract

It is known to science that a person’s  mental and emotional energy is able to affect his/her biological processes. The medical aspect of Psycho-neuro-immunology is indeed the study of how these influences cause variations in the individual’s immune system. But orthodox science don’t accept yet that certain individuals have the ability to influence – through a physical contact or at a distance – the biological structure of other people.

The present study valuates the influence that the known Filipino “spiritual healer” Alex Orbito has on human biological material (blood in our experiment). With Orbito, the energy transfer seems to take place through a manual contact.

From the results obtained we may hypothesize a new bio-chemical model of the human body that takes into consideration emotional and mental aspects of the person. A parallel research is studying changes induced to waters treated by the same healer. (see: New proofs in Support of the Memory in Water, by the same author).

The Case of the Fibrin Factor

The idea that people treated by Orbito might undergo biological alterations of their blood was born by a fortuitous coincidence. In March of 2001, a person had in Italy a treatment of Spiritual Healing by Orbito. A few days later, that person, under request from his personal physician who was treating him for a physical ailment, had some blood tests done. Analyzing the results, the doctor noticed that the patient’s fibrin factor had inexplicably and suddenly jumped to high values. The fibrin factor is that protein that the body produces when it senses an internal or external injury; it works like a building material to stem any blood loss. The doctor asked the patient how come he had undergone a surgical operation (as evidenced by the level of the fibrin factor) without informing his personal physician.

Naturally the patient hadn’t done any surgery but, put off by the irritated tone of the doctor, choose not to explain the possible causes of the fibrin increase: that is, the healer’s treatment.

When the researchers who are studying the nature of the energy produced by the healer were informed by the patient about the event, they decided to look into it, principally to determine if the phenomenon had some reliable measurability and repetitiveness. Any confirmation would have helped to devise a biological model explaining the interaction healer-patient, and to show a certain connection between mind and biological matter.

The Experiment

On June 7, 2001, the day before Orbito was to treat a number of patients, four volunteers had some blood samples taken by an independent laboratory. The variables to be analyzed were:

Haemocromo, with leucocyte formula

Glycemia,

VES (coagulation proofs),

Fibrin factor.

The test machinery was calibrated with an error margin of 1% and requested to show statistical variations of 10-15%.

The four volunteers were adults, between 30 and 58 years of age. One of the four didn’t have any treatment of “Spiritual Healing” before. All had the blood samples taken before eating and under correct technical conditions.

The following day, under the same conditions, the blood draw was repeated immediately after Orbito’s treatment. It has to be pointed out that the healer’s treatments (lasting, on the average, 2-3 minutes) were performed with the same modality on all the volunteers. That is, the healer, with his hands, “entered” energetically inside the abdomen of the patient.

The data obtained is synthesized below. It corresponds to the statistical variations given by the machinery used.

The Black Box Model

From the table’s qualitative data, we can state a first postulate: the interaction healer/volunteer has produced some biological variations on the subject treated at the molecular level. To better describe these results, we propose a classical “Black Box” model”:

Blood values in (A)  Ž  interaction healer/volunteer Ž  Blood values out (B)

where the ratio A/B represents the statistically meaningful variations shown in the table, and the black box  represents the energetic exchange healer/volunteer, the nature of which we don’t understand, but that is the interfering factor that produced the variation.

The black box model is understandable to any western mind. Also, the instrumentation used and the values examined belong to western formulations. But the substance of what happens inside the black box, that is, the healer’s action, is set in such reference postulates (such as the concept of energy transfer, a certain vision of reality and of disease, etc.) that are not contemplated by modern medicine and by western, orthodox science.

The model shows clearly that (A) is not equal to (B): there has been a clear interaction of the healer with the patient. The model’s simplicity allows, through deeper, logical examinations, the modification of those western theoretical suppositions not suited to understand what happens inside the black box.

Analysis of Results

Let us see now in greater detail the results obtained. Taking for the moment into consideration the only fibrin factor, the table shows that one of the volunteers had a marked increase of this value (over 100 units):

            Volunteer 1 –   slight decrease

            Volunteer 2 –   slight increase

            Volunteer 3 –   slight decrease

            Volunteer 4 –   increase of 100 units

(This is the person who met the healer for the first time).

Even in one person such an increase on the fibrin factor is clinically unexplainable. Indeed, such a change would be justifiable only in the presence of a consistent wound on the subject. Event that didn’t take place. By itself, the result would confirm a sort of interaction between the healer’s energy and the biochemical aspect of the person treated. Generalizing the statement, the result would show that, under certain circumstances, the mind (in this case, that of the healer) is capable of influencing matter (in this case, the volunteer’s biological substance).

It remains to be explained why only one subject , of the four treated, has shown a marked change in the value of the fibrin factor. Two explanations are possible:

1) This subject was never previously treated by Orbito. He volunteered for the experiment because he was asked to, but he didn’t know what the treatment was about, nor he displayed any curiosity or interest for the method. We could suppose that his body reacted “physically” to the intrusion of the healer’s hands by producing, as a reaction, an increase in the fibrin factor.

Instead, the other three volunteers had in the past several treatments with the healer. Because of this “memory”, perhaps the biochemical aspect of their bodies didn’t react as markedly to Orbito’s hands.

2) The previous supposition is based on a purely mechanistic view (stimulus-reaction) of the human body. By observing all the test results for the four volunteers, a more holistic model seems to emerge. It includes the influence of other, subtler aspects of human nature, including the personality (and soul) aspects: those qualities that differentiate any human being from all the other ones, making him/her unique and therefore only approximately reducible to a model.

This model is based on the principle of maximization of the energy treatment done by a healer. It is aimed to re-establish in the person the best possible health (here the concept of “best possible health” includes all aspects and levels of human existence, be they physical, mental, emotional, etc.).

The objective of any healer is to optimize, at the moment of the treatment, the patient’s health. This is done by maximizing the levels of his/her wellness and minimizing those of his/her discomfort. The maximization of the treatment depends on the skills of the healer in transmitting those energies that the person (through a conscious/unconscious mechanism) will utilize for self-healing.

But, no matter how skillful the healer, no one will be able to interfere on the individual’s evolutionary aspect. This means that, no matter how many cures receives an individual, only the person will be able to win on a sickness and return to health.

Thus, in accordance to the maximization of the treatment principle, this is the reason why in the experiment some biochemical values increased, while others decreased. Those results, if seen with the lens of the present medical model, would have led, instead, to inexplicable discrepancies.

The principle of the energetic optimization is therefore the main aspect of this model of individual wellness. A closer observation could show us another fundamental principle in action: that of the “infallibility” of the treatment.

Indeed, since it is not the healer who acts directly (he/she is only an agency through which the energy is transferred to the person), we can postulate that the amount and manner in which the energy is absorbed is, by definition, the exact measure that the person is able to utilize at that specific moment. In a reductive but fitting manner, we could compare the entire energetic procedure to the mathematical solution of maximum/minimum equations applied to the person’s total well being. It should be noted that the “mathematician” is not the healer, but the person’s consciousness, seen in its total aspect.

Model Improvement

To refine the model and to improve its understanding, in the future experiments we are planning to test up to 20 volunteers. The blood variables to test will be increased, in an attempt to better define how the different organs react to the energy transmitted, and which energy correlations exist among themselves. Naturally, any model supposition will have always to deal with the uniqueness of the person, that is with his/her evolutionary aspect:

___variable_____ ____organ or material aspect_____

 Ves                                        red cell sediment. speed

 Glycemia                                pancreas

 Azotemia                                kidneys

 Creatininemia                        kidneys

 Electrolytes                             blood

 Fibrin factor                           liver

 Cholesterol                             fat

If the model will be proved reasonably correct, a further refinement would be the ability to quality predict the biochemical modification of the person treated, to arrive in a future phase to a quantitative prediction of the modifications.
